There Will Be A New Soo Lock

But getting a new lock in the Sault may be like saying the Sun is going to burn out eventually. Both may be certainties but there's no reason to wait around for them.

Washboard Roads And Skipping Stones

Everyone who drives on Neebish Island's gravel roads is familiar with the washboarding phenomenon. Turns out the physics involved are similar to stone skipping. See: Scientists explore the physics of bumpy roads

There is also a Mythbusters episode where they confirmed that driving at a higher speed over washboard roads results in a smoother ride because the car's wheels "travel over just the ridges and not into the troughs, allowing for a relatively smoother ride."

I've found that driving at around 35 mph on Neebish's gravel roads results in the smoothest ride in my car.

Cleaning Your Cottage

I normally use a spray bottle filled with vinegar to clean most anything. I like to be conscious of what is used because with all of us on Neebish Island drinking ground water and using septic fields, the last thing I want to do is introduce a caustic chemical that I will end up drinking later.

For a fully stocked environmentally friendly cleaning solution see: How to Make a Non-Toxic Cleaning Kit

The only thing missing is a basic white toothpaste (without whiteners or other additions). You can use toothpaste to clean stove tops, crusty pots and pans, and it'll get the smell of fish off your hands.

Water Levels Update

The news is that the levels of the Great Lakes are up. See the Traverse City Record-Eagle: Great Lakes levels rebound

However, this is a demonstration of why statistics are kept - because short term observations can be deceiving. So, although water levels are rising in the upper Great Lakes, they are still below long term averages.
